This course is designed to provide healthcare professionals and support workers with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively manage ventilator support, in accordance with the NDIS Practice Standards: High Intensity Support Skills Descriptors (November 2022). The training emphasizes the development and implementation of a comprehensive ventilator management support plan, created under the guidance of a qualified health practitioner and with active participant involvement. Students will learn how to maintain an up-to-date, clear, and concise support plan that accurately reflects the participant’s specific ventilator support needs and preferences, as well as how to ensure timely health status reviews by an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

The course covers critical aspects of ventilator support, including the initiation, setup, and operation of ventilation equipment, as well as identifying and responding to potential risks, incidents, and emergencies. Participants will gain an understanding of the importance of clear communication and the appropriate sharing of the support plan, with consent, across the participant's support network, other providers, and relevant government agencies. Additionally, the course ensures that workers are equipped with the necessary policies, procedures, supervision, and access to essential equipment, including backup ventilator systems and consumables, to provide safe and effective ventilator support.
